Three Ways to Celebrate April Fools' Day

Jimmy Ray Purser,

If you watched the first season of SpongeBob SquarePants, you know the day Squidward hated the most was 01 April. One of my all-time favorite lines in the series came from this episode: “April Fools, jerk”

So in the sprit of that episode AND April Fools’ Day itself, I submit to you three April Fools pranks that’ll have folks quoting that line to you around the office. But don’t worry, they are all harmless, so you won’t get your butt kicked for permanently trashing someone’s machine.

Jimmy Ray's Tech Log

Prank 00x01: Dude, You’re Upgrading to Vista!

I don’t think Vista was ever considered anything but a joke from the day it was first released. Well, maybe it was a sequel to a joke that started with ME and ended with Vista. I’ve had a hoot with this prank over the years. It runs a bogus upgrade screen and will totally wig anyone out!

Prank 00x02: The Upside-Down-Ternet

A few years back, I was forwarded this page from a friend of mine.

Ever since, it’s been a standard operating procedure of mine to offer up free wireless access via a poorly configured (default settings) AP at my house/public hotspot every 01 April. It’s an easy prank to pull, and you can change the redirects to something new every year. Like this one.

Prank 00x03: Fun with Linux

Wanna be a total—but still harmless—wanker? Okay. Here’s one for you.

It works on Linux boxes and it does this:

Yeah, if you do this, you suck. Like a slow driving in the left lane with your blinker on level of suckyness.

Have a great April Fools’ Day!

—Jimmy Ray
