At this year’s fourth annual AWS re:Invent conference (my third time in attendance), I focused my time on digging deeper into containers—arguably today’s hottest topic. I, along with a few of my colleagues, had been experimenting with containers for a few months. If You Can’t Beat Data Breaches, Contain Them

Two of my credit card companies detected fraudulent transactions on my cards worth $19,896 last month. My credit card information was probably stolen by the hackers that broke into the databases of a number of banks and retailers last year.

Hackers break into a data center, steal credit card numbers, and then sell them—usually online. People can buy the stolen credit cards from websites and then go on a shopping spree. The sites selling these credit cards even had a Black Friday sale last year.

Imagine proposing a host-based agent solution to a team of seasoned IT administrators. You will get some obvious questions right away:

  • How much CPU and memory does the agent consume?
  • Does it use a custom kernel module?
  • What if that crashes the kernel? 
  • Is it in the data path processing packets?
  • How much disk space does it use?
  • How intrusive is it to my system?
  • Does it affect my standard system configuration?
