Cybersecurity: IoT, DDOS, and botnets

Nathaniel Gleicher,

Here's what I'm reading this week:

  1. DDoS: New and Improved: A new, record-setting distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack appears to have links to the recent DDoS targeted at Brian Krebs. Those links are only spotty so far, but one thing that is clear is that both attacks use botnets made up mostly of exposed Internet of Things (IoT) devices with weak security protocols and unchangeable default passwords. Security researchers have long warned that the rapid growth of IoT devices, combined with the limited attention developers have paid to their security, risks creating significant new threats. With IoT botnets of nearly 500,000 bots generating DDoS attacks at unprecedented levels of traffic, this fear is no longer theoretical. I’m reading: “Hackers create more IoT botnets with Mirai source code.”
