This month, meet Sam Reese, Head of Americas Field & Channel Marketing at Illumio. Hear why Illumio’s mission is so important to Sam and how Illumio allows her to be both Mom and Marketer.

Tell me about yourself. What do you do at Illumio?

I'm a data-driven field marketing leader with a “builder” mindset and a love of working with hyper-growth companies. I have 10+ years of marketing experience including a strong understanding and application of best-in-class marketing tactics to generate, accelerate, and expand sales pipeline through field marketing.

I’m currently the Head of Americas Field & Channel Marketing for the Americas region at Illumio. I oversee a phenomenal team of Senior Field Marketing Managers, and together we develop and implement various marketing programs that promote Illumio. 

What made you interested in working at Illumio?

I’ve been in the tech space for over 10 years now, and with the focus on digital transformation, there is no lack of opportunities out there with companies who are developing truly innovating products.

What excited me – and still excites me – about Illumio is that I felt like I would also be working for a cause. Ransomware attacks occur every 11 seconds, and traditional prevention and detection tools unfortunately aren’t enough to keep organizations safe anymore.

I fell in love with Illumio’s mission and am grateful to be a part of the innovation and industry disruption that you can expect from a Leader in two Forrester Wave reports.

What does a day in the life of Sam look like? What are you working on that excites you?

Usually, I get started early checking emails and getting caught up on Slack messages while also supervising my children as they get ready for the school day.

Once I’ve tackled school drop off, which is a feat all on its own (I know other parents with school-aged children can relate to this), I dive into meetings with my sales teams, other marketing cross-functional teams, and 1:1’s with my team. I am also planning and budgeting for how we’ll continue to spread the Illumio message across the Americas.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned at Illumio so far?

Never underestimate the power of small teams who are passionate about the same mission.

I noticed this even during my interview process with Illumio. Everyone has their different roles and teams, but what they’re really passionate about is the company as a whole. This is what has allowed Illumio’s small team to make big things happen.

What are you passionate outside of your career? 

My family. I’m a wife and mom of 3. Outside of work you can usually find me in my part-time role as an Uber driver for my children (ages 14, 13, and 6) or in the stands being their biggest cheerleader while they participate in volleyball, football, basketball, and golf.

When people describe me, I hope they lead with she’s an incredible mother first and then followed by she’s a fantastic marketing business partner as a strong second. I’m passionate about my professional career, and I’m very fulfilled by the work I’m doing at Illumio, but I will always keep a family-first mindset. Illumio provides the kind of company culture that I need to be both Mom and Marketer.

Which Illumio core value resonates most with you and why?

Onwards Together is my favorite company value. Working together not only creates efficiency across multiple teams, but it also enables teams to share ideas, best practices, and responsibilities which in turn, for me, really creates a sense of belonging.

When I joined Illumio as a fully remote employee, I was worried about being able to form important work connections and relationships and just the potential of feeling siloed from other teams. After about a week as an Illumineer, I learned that the favorite phrase here is, “How can I help support you?”

We’re all working towards the same goals, and as a company, we truly believe we’ll always achieve more together.

What do you want people to know about working at Illumio?

Everyone at Illumio is very collaborative. It was obvious from my first day at Illumio that people want to support each other’s work and help each other get their projects across the finish line. This stems from a focus and passion on the overall company mission and what we’re trying to accomplish together as an organization.

The work environment at Illumio encourages that kind of collaboration – it’s important to me to work with people that want to collaborate and live that culture.
