Illumio Recognized in 5 Gartner® Hype Cycle™ Reports

In 2023, three Hype Cycle reports1 from Gartner included microsegmentation and recognized Illumio as a Sample Vendor. For 2024, five Hype Cycle reports include microsegmentation, and Illumio is listed as a Sample Vendor in each:

  • Hype Cycle for Zero Trust Networking
  • Hype Cycle for Enterprise Networking
  • Hype Cycle for Workload and Network Security
  • Hype Cycle for Cyber-Physical Systems Security
  • Hype Cycle for Private Mobile Network Services

In each of the published Hype Cycle reports that include microsegmentation this year, Gartner recognized microsegmentation as:

  • A high-benefit technology
  • Expected to achieve mainstream adoption within the next two years
  • On the Gartner Hype Cycle Slope of Enlightenment to offer real-world adoption and benefits

New technologies, such as generative AI (GenAI), are bringing significant benefits to business but are also necessitating new approaches to cybersecurity. We believe this functions as a driver that is pushing more organizations to adopt microsegmentation.

Why we believe microsegmentation is foundational to your Zero Trust journey

As more devices connect to the internet, our daily lives become easier, but this also introduces new risk. It’s becoming a bigger challenge for CISOs, security teams, and IT teams due to the increased complexity and growing threat landscape, which traditional security methods can’t keep up with.

According to Gartner, “As servers are being virtualized, containerized or moved to infrastructure as a service (IaaS), existing safeguards such as traditional firewalls, intrusion prevention solutions and antivirus software struggle to follow the fast pace of deployment for new assets.”

Microsegmentation goes beyond traditional methods. We can't detect or prevent all breaches in today's complex threat landscape. Instead, microsegmentation assumes breaches will happen and prepares your network to stop them from spreading.

Zero Trust Segmentation (ZTS) platforms aim to provide visibility over all communication and traffic between workloads and devices. With this information, companies can create granular controls for cloud, endpoint, and on-premises environments to quickly stop the spread of ransomware and breaches.

How GenAI is affecting microsegmentation adoption

GenAI is seeing significant growth as many organizations use it to improve their products and simplify processes. But security teams are also facing greater security threats, as bad actors use it to create new and more advanced cyberattacks, leading to an increase in successful breaches.

Network security strategies need to keep up with how fast GenAI is growing. Modern security solutions like microsegmentation are becoming more important to stop the next possible attack.

According to Gartner, “Microsegmentation can mitigate the risk and impact of cyberattacks. It is one component of zero-trust architecture that controls the access between workloads and is used to limit lateral movement, if and when an attacker breaches the enterprise network.”

Microsegmentation focuses on stopping breaches rather than preventing or detecting them. As GenAI attacks become more frequent and advanced, it’s important for security teams to be ready for breaches so their organizations can stay resilient against attacks.

Why choose Illumio for microsegmentation?

The Illumio Zero Trust Segmentation (ZTS) Platform is the industry’s first platform for containing breaches. It’s easy to use, can scale with your organization, and helps you build consistent microsegmentation across your entire hybrid, multi-cloud network.

With Illumio ZTS, you can quickly and easily:

  • See risk: See all communication and traffic, both known and unknown, between workflows, devices, and the internet.
  • Set policy: With every change, automatically set granular segmentation policies to control unnecessary and unwanted communications.
  • Stop the spread: Automatically isolate compromised systems and critical assets in minutes. Proactively stop the spread of a breach or reactively isolate systems during an active attack.
