3 Steps to Reduce Ransomware Risk With Illumio’s New Ransomware Protection Dashboard

You did it. You’ve assumed breach. You recognize that the risks are too great to think “it won’t happen to me." You’re ready to make your organization a resilient rockstar that is ready for the worst. But where do you start?

Illumio’s Ransomware Protection Dashboard and improved user interface (UI) gives you key visibility into risk so you can prioritize and tackle the ransomware threat. The easy-to-use and intuitive UI can get you on the right path on your Zero Trust journey right from day one.

Benefits of the Illumio Ransomware Protection Dashboard

The Ransomware Protection Dashboard can help you better prepare and protect against the threat of attack by giving you key insights into the following:

  • How many of your workloads currently have critical, high, medium, and low risk of exposure
  • Visualize the total number of protected versus unprotected workloads
  • Review your protection coverage score: The report turns red, yellow, or green to demonstrate how you are doing in building policy that protects against the cyber threat

All this data continuously updates as you deploy policy and progress along your Zero Trust Segmentation journey, helping you realize value with Illumio as you progress on this journey.

Improve your cyber resilience in 3 steps

Now, you may be thinking, “Great, but where do I begin?” Let’s do a quick walkthrough of how you can put this dashboard to use today.

Step 1

In the screenshot below, I can see that I have 72 workloads that are protection-ready. This means that these workloads can be managed by Illumio and are ready to have policy deployed. Once we deploy policy and block risky ports, we will see those same workloads show up in my Protected Workloads report to the right of the Protection Ready report. This can help us be more proactive. Alternatively, if we discover a threat of lateral movement, we can leverage our integrations with SOAR platforms to prevent lateral movement with a single click. This contains the threat from spreading.

I also want to note the Protection Coverage Score report. This highlights the percentage of the entire possible attack surface that is actively protected by security policies. This score is currently in the red. It will change from red to yellow to green as our score increases. I can also see on the Workload by Ransomware Exposure report that 55 workloads have a critical exposure.

Based on the information provided, I now know I have some workloads that have a critical exposure, and I should prioritize those. I know that I can eliminate this risk and significantly improve my ransomware protection score in just a few minutes with a deny rule.

Step 2

After reviewing the services section within Illumio, I know the services considered critical are RDP, RPC, SMB, and FTP. My next logical step will be to create a new rule. Because this is a critical exposure, I plan to add a block across all workloads. I know that Illumio will give me an overview of traffic that would be blocked so I can quickly review it before the policy is ever applied and make exceptions for specific traffic if needed.

Step 3

Once I provision this rule, the boundary is built at each individual host. This happens rapidly and at scale. Now, if we head back to our Ransomware Dashboard, we can see how much our protection score has improved with just a few quick steps.

This kind of visibility is key to helping you rapidly understand where to begin improving protection, building cyber resilience, and easily realizing value with a path to quick ROI.

Implementing this kind of process has measurable benefits for your organization. Forrester Consulting recently dug into the actual returns, cost savings, and business benefits that our customers experience in a Total Economic Impact (TEI) report of Illumio Zero Trust Segmentation.

The study examined the ROI and business benefits of the Illumio ZTS Platform according to real customer experiences and data.

Forrester found fast value, triple-digit return on investment, and other notable benefits like:

  • 66% decrease in blast radius: Easily restrict east-west lateral movement
  • $3.8 million reduced cost and impact of downtime: By minimizing the impact of a breach, you also minimize downtime for end users and revenue-generating applications
  • 111% ROI: Get the total benefit of Illumio ZTS in just three years

By leveraging insights from the Ransomware Protection Dashboard, you can restrict east-west lateral movement and minimize the impact of a breach, contributing to your total ROI.
